First things first. This will work on any V3c and probably V3m, but you must have a data plan! If you don’t, you’ll get charged by the kilobyte. This gets expensive quick! So technically it’s not free. For US Cellular customers get the Unlimted EasyEdge plan for $9.99 a month and you’re set. This eliminates the need to pay $4.99 a month to use the nWeb browser. I call it free because it’s easier than “reduced cost” WAP. That said, Let’s get started!
What you need:
HoTTProxy (windows only, unless you know how to run a perl script) Download here
Unlimited Data Plan
Home Broadband internet connection (cable, DSL, satellite, etc.)
Step 1:
Extract the files in the ZIP file to C:\Program Files\HoTTProxy
Step 2:
In windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\HoTTProxy and run HoTTProxyAdmin.exe
Step 3:
Once you see this window:
Start your web browser (I highly recommend FireFox) and type http://localhost:8085 like this:
and you will see a page like this:
Step 3:
Now you should have a screen like this:
9201 is the default, just leave it alone unless you have problems. You may also have to open this port on your router or firewall if it doesn’t work. Leave the rest alone, unless you know what you’re doing. Then click the “Save Configuration” button at the bottom. Then you should get a “Configuration successfully written”. Now just click “Main Menu” at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.
Step 4:
Now select “Create User”. You should get a window like this:
Fill in the information. Even if you don’t check the “Store password in plain-text instead of MD5 hash” it will still be stored as plaintext in your websessions file on your phone, although an MD5 hash on your desktop, will make your proxy harder to hack. Also don’t worry about your password being short enough to type on your phone. You’ll only have to type it once. Also leave the homepage blank unless you want it to be different based on what phone you are using to access the proxy.
Step 5:
Click the “Submit” button at the bottom of the screen. Once that is done, you can close your browser, and close the HoTTProxyAdmin program. When you close the Admin program it will pop this warning:
don’t worry about it, just click “End Now”
Your proxy is set up! Now we have to configure your phone to use it!
Step 6:
Open your phone and type ##BROWSER (##2769737) and a menu titles “Web Sessions” will pop up. Now select “[New Entry]”
Step 7:
Enter a name like Free WAP enter your username and password in the “User ID:” and “Password” fields. On your PC’s browser, go to http://www.whatismyip.com and enter the IP that appears under “Gateway IP 1”. Change the port numbers if you selected something other than 9201. Select “Done” with the right soft key.
Step 8:
Now on your PC, navigate to C:\Program Files\HoTTProxy (or wherever you unzipped it to) and run HoTTProxy.exe. This program must be running for your phone to access WAP through OpenWave
Step 9:
Now highlight your “Free WAP” (or whatever you named it) entry in websessions and select it with the middle d-pad button. This not only sets your Free WAP entry as default but also launches the OpenWave browser and should take you to your homepage
Conclusion:
Sorry I don’t have screenshots for the phone, I haven’t found any way to take them on the V3c. If you know how, please PM or e-mail me with instructions. If you have problems or questions, please go to our V3c/V3m Forums
