Personal tools

Razr v3 customize menu

From Guides

by apristel

Overview: This tutorial will assist you in changing the names of your menu item (i.e. Phonebook to Adam’s Peeps)

This is the final result:

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names1.bmp

Tools Needed:

SHXCoDec

midas.dll. Required by SHXCoDec--put it in the same folder.

RSD_Lite or Equivalent – You need to find this on your own.. Try Google

LP (Language Pack)

Note: If you use a custom font such as Ariel for example, you can just use the .SHX Flash file for this process. In this tutorial, I am using the Technical Font.

Things to do before you start:

Unpack the LP if it is in a compressed folder i.e. .zip or .rar. This can be achieved using WinRAR or similar.

All Set?

Lets Begin,Open SHXCoDec and push the button shown below. (Little folder icon)

A box will pop up like this:

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names3.bmp

Now, you’ll need to locate the LP that you plan on customizing. Once you’ve found it, click open.

Now you’ll see something like this:

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names4.bmp

Click the “Split source SHX file” and you’ll see it split the .shx file into 2 parts as shown below.

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names5.bmp

Now you’ll need to double click on the “LangPack”. This will open up the LangPack editor within SHXCoDec.

Now you’ll see this box.

Highlight the Language of your choice (I’m using the US English)

Now click the “Parse language” button. You will see the bottom portion of the window fill up with words from the LP.

Now in my case, I am going to change the word “Phonebook” to “Adam’s Peeps” I learned that the word “Phonebook” is listed in 5 locations in this LP. I think it will be the same in yours, but if not, find them on your own. :)

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names8.bmp

The locations for Phonebook are:

00FE
003E
0400
042F
0AC7

Note: these may vary, you can dig around and find them yourself if they are not at the listed locations.

Now that we have found 1 of the entries, edit the text to whatever you want. In my case, it’s going to be “Adam’s Peeps”

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names9.bmp

Ok, now that you have edited ALL entries that you want, click the “Pack Strings” button. Remember I only show 1 entry, there are numerous ones for the entry "Phonebook"

Once they are packed, click the “Save Langpack” button towards the top of the SHXCoDec screen.

NOT the “Save language” button. This will popup:

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names10.bmp

Enter a name (whatever you want) for this file and click save.

Make sure you know where you are saving it to. In my case it’s a folder named “font”. This folder is located on my desktop for ease of finding it in the steps that follow.

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names11.bmp

It will give you this dialog box saying it was saved and the location as to where it was saved on your computer.

Now CLOSE the Langpack editor. You should still have the first SHXCoDec screen up.

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names12.bmp

Now make sure you still have the LangPack highlighted and click the “Replace” button.

You’ll see this:

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names13.bmp

Locate the file we just saved above. I saved mine as “MY CUSTOM LP.smg” Once you’ve found it, click Open.

You will get a warning. Just click yes.

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names14.bmp

Now click the “Compile SHX” button.

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names15.bmp

You’ll now get this box.

http://www.poeticfolly.com/motoguide/gurus/Menu_Names/names16.bmp

Type in a new name for your flash and remember the location. Then click “Save”. This shows I saved it as Technical.shx. You can save it to whatever you want. Just remember where you save it. (Putting it on the desktop is a good idea… I should have, but it doesn’t really matter.)

OK ALMOST THERE!!! Get up stretch, have a smoke or drink.

Now close out SHXCoDec.

Next,

Open up RSD_Lite or whatever you are using to flash. (I recommend RSD_Lite as it has NEVER given me any issues.)

Once RSD_Lite is open and you are connected to your phone. Open the flash file saved. Mine was Technical.shx.

Flash that to your phone. Once the flash is complete and your phone is rebooted, go to your menu and see the change.

After that, brag to your friends about your CUSTOM menu. Tell them that you learned how to do this at: ModMyMoto!

Here is my final result.

Happy Modding.

Thanks to mikekay10 for initially helping me with SHXCoDec.

I hope this helps everyone out. If you experience trouble or notice something wrong in my guide, post and let me know.
